First of all, me and my sister came directly from Québec (Canada) just to visit San Diego (SD) for a week. And at first I was a bit skeptical due to the previous reviews, but listen this hotel for the price, the location, the cleanliness of the rooms, it’s truly a gem. The staff is amazingly sweet. The first night we check-in it was really late due to the traffic at the airport and the guy at the reception was waiting for us, it was around 11pm. Couple days later, they gave us an access card to visit all the parks in SD and we ask them what’s great in the city, what can we do and see in SD, etc., they took their time to explain everything to us, even we the language barrier (we speak French). Also, the hotel is clean and smelling great, you can have all sort of drinks in the morning for free. The room that we have was clean, and the bathroom was super cute. There’s free Wi-Fi in the hotel. Bref, for me I’ll gladly come back in the futur to the Occidental Hotel!:)

I recently stayed there for a weekend. And it was amazing! Super easy to access, clean, and very convinient! Staff is super nice and the vibe of the place is awesome! Definitely coming back!
Okay, here's the deal...this hotel is for students, Europeans and people in the know, traveling cheap. It's the best kept secret in the entire county. For relatively small amounts, you can see San Diego and stay in a safe place. It's hard to get in so you probably won't land there but after your stay, you'll appreciate this review.
My boyfriend and I stayed here in August (18th-19th) 2023 for my birthday weekend, it was 5 min. drive to Gas Lamp. As a native San Diego resident I have no complaints, the room was beyond my exceptions and the service was friendly. I recommend staying here if your looking for a nice place, at a fair price that won't break your bank.
The staff at Hotel Occidental are amazing and genuinely care about their customers and work they do. I would like to especially mention Stephanie at the front desk for going over and beyond. She is amazing and hope she is recognized for her efforts and exemplary customer service! Can’t thank her enough!
Great spot for a couple nights in downtown SD. Very close to little Italy. I walked there, 8 minutes or so. Room was perfect for what I needed. Clean, friendly staff and close to where I was visiting.
Balboa Park Hotel (Occidental) has been one of the best stays I have had in a while. This is a boutique hotel experience, built in a former Sequoia Club residence north of San Diego. They have cheerful front desk folks, who allowed me access to my room a tad early, to refreshen up before heading out. Balboa park and a really nice coffee shop (Mostra) are just two blocks away, so you have a wide choice of venues to check out and eating establishments to try. This place is for the self sufficient folks who don't need a morning breakfast buffet, and can key in at night from being out and about. Lot's of European folks stay here, which just tells you its a great deal.
